Kimble is a clerk in a grocery store that gets robbed. The proprietor shoots the robber, who is disguised in a ski mask as he escapes. The police think Kimble may be involved as he doesn't seem to have any provable background, although they don't know who he really is yet. But the real complication is that the thief, (Beau Bridges), is the son of the police chief, (John Larch), who now has the twin dilemmas of arresting or protecting his estranged son and getting medical help for him. He finds out from his wanted poster who Kimble is and goes after him himself. He forces Kimble at gunpoint to come to his house and treat his son, who has developed a fever and badly needs to be in a hospital. To add to the dramatic stew, the son's girlfriend, whom the Chief has treated dismissively, is pregnant with his son's child. And she wants him to live, even if he has to go to jail.
