4/10
A very different Painlevé
4 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If you know a bit about this French documentary filmmaker from the 20th century, then you will be aware that most of his works are about animals, occasionally some very obscure ones actually. This one here, however, only depicts animals on one or two occasions and the title already says that "La quatrième dimension" talks about time being the fourth dimension. Early on, it elaborates on the three other dimensions, but it's really very basic mathematics stuff that everybody has learned at school and everything afterward is about how time may (or may not) be the 4th dimension. I personally do not agree with this theory, which may be why I did not enjoy this 10-minute film a lot. It is a bit of a transitional film for Painlevé. Not a silent film anymore, but still in black-and-white and he was still very young when he made this one. All in all, I myself prefer some of his animal documentaries. This one here gets a thumbs down from me.
