Michiko to Hatchin (2008–2009)

Michiko & Hatchin

Warning: Spoilers
This anime series is set in 'Diamandra' a fictional South American country that is mostly inspired by Brazil and follows our two eponymous protagonists as they travel through the country. Michiko is an escaped convicted who has 'freed' ten year old Hatchin from her abusive adoptive family. Michiko is convinced that Hatchin is the daughter of Hiroshi Morenos a former lover who was believed to have died many years ago… before Hatchin was conceived. Seeing Hatchin as proof that Hiroshi must be alive they set off to find him. As they travel together they don't always get along and they have to deal with numerous dangers including the police and various gangsters.

This series is an enjoyable adventure; the South American setting makes a refreshing change as does the multi-ethnic cast of characters. The characters are spirited and fun to watch as they frequently argue, and sometimes separate for an episode or two. Their quest to find Hiroshi is interesting, not only because it provides the reason for them to travel but also there is the question of whether Hatchin's father is actually the man they are looking for. The character designs are good and the backgrounds give a good South American feel to the story. Overall I'd recommend this to anime fans who want something a little different with a good amount of action as well as well-developed characters.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
