The Cocoanuts (1929)
7/10
funny, sweet, and classic marx brothers film
12 April 2017
Although not nearly as funny as some of their later work. the Marx Brothers' feature film debut contains plenty of memorable and laugh out loud scenes throughout. Utilizing their verbal wit, physical zaniness, and occasional surrealism to a wonderfully entertaining degree, the Marx Brothers form one of the funniest and least dated comedies of the late 1920's. Thanks to the invention of talkie cinema, the public was now able to consume the delightful, rapid-fire verbal deadpan wit of the great Groucho Marx, as well as listen to the occasional musical talents of Chico and Harpo.

While every scene featuring the Marx Brothers is comedy at its most entertaining and amusing, the plot surrounding them is quite dull and boring. I simply did not care, which is unfortunate since this could have been a much better film if the plot was as likable as that of "A Night at the Opera''s (although that plot was ridiculously cliché, at least I fell in love with its characters). However, the main attraction is never the plot of a Marx Brothers film, but how the Marx Brothers use that plot to create hilarious, laugh out loud gags throughout.
