Well-Made and Worth Watching

Orgy at Lil's Place (1963)

** (out of 4)

Sisters decide to head to New York City where they both end up getting jobs working as nude models. Before long they begin to take on more jobs before they end up at Lil's place.

ORGY AT LIL'S PLACE is a film that was lost for several decades before a print finally turned up and it was shown at a theater in Bloomington, Indiana of all places. The film would eventually be released to Blu-ray and I must say that I was really shocked to see how wonderful the print was. The film itself had become a cult favorite even before people saw it because of the poster, which I must say turned out to be much better than the film itself.

The film deserves some credit because it's considered the first roughie so there's no question that it would influence the sub-genre that would become quite popular in New York. I'd also give director Jerald Intrator some credit because technically speaking the film is well-made but people must remember that this was the "first" roughie so they shouldn't be expecting certain things that would pop up in the genre later on.

If you're expecting anything brutal or overly dirty then you're going to be disappointed because there's really not too much nudity and the "rough" stuff is very tame by today's standards and its even tame for the genre standards. As was the case with a lot of these movies, this here was shot silent and we get narration from start to finish as the sister constantly tells us what we're seeing as well as explaining the character's situations.

ORGY AT LIL'S PLACE isn't a masterpiece or even a good film but there are enough interesting moments to make it worth watching. The cinematography is certainly beautiful and as I said the picture is certainly well-made. Plus, it was fun getting to see New York City as it was in 1963.
