Gilbert was in bad shape
17 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this film a lot, particularly Lois Moran's acting. However, the morning after the marriage when Gilbert confronts Moran, he has terrible shakes. He wasn't acting. If I were directing this picture, I would be embarrassed to keep those scenes in the picture. The fact that they weren't re-shot lends credence to the rumor that Mayer was destroying his career. This film and Downstairs (1933) show that Gilbert could have had a long career as a top villain. One other plaudit to Cedric Gibbons, who at this point in time, was doing marvelous art deco sets. To make a ranch semi-art deco was a real challenge that was beautifully accomplished.
