Warning: Spoilers
I look at movies on their own merit instead of comparing them to others that are not remakes. I see a lot of comparisons to ' Broken Arrow' and it is simply not fair. Why? Robert Wagner ( Jeff Tanner), is NOT James Stewart. But then again who is on Stewart's level in All-Time greatness while excelling in westerns? Gary Cooper, maybe Henry Fonda, Alan Ladd or Gregory Peck? But that might be it. On to the movie itself. It is really about the choices that we make and the consequences of them.. Cheyenne Chief Broken Hand signing a Peace Treaty with the US Government, while his son Little Dog ( Jeffrey Hunter ( best known as Captain Pike from Star Trek's pilot ' The Cage')) defies his wishes and chooses to die instead, and his daughter Appearing Day ( Debra Paget) Spoilers Ahead: also defies him by going with her heart by choosing Tanner and deciding to live in the " White World" instead of choosing the American Horse ( Hugh O'Brien) who wants to marry her for the price of 200 horses. The fate of Appearing Day is one of two things that makes this movie different. Why? Indian women in the movies, who marry Americans usually have one or two outcomes. 1: Death like what happened to Paget in Broken Arrow. 2: The American elects to live in the Indian World like Kirk Douglas did with Elsa Martinelli in the ' Indian Fighter.' ( also made in 1955). The other is there are no truly evil people in this movie. Store Keeper Magruder hates Indians because of what happenedned to his daughter as a teenager ( being raped is hinted at), and American Horse come the closest. Again a very underrated movie and worth watching.
