An interesting but little portrayed insight into the hardships experienced during the 1845 potato famine in Ireland.

It centres around a native Irishman who had joined the British army, served in the then Afghanistan campaign and thence deserted. He returns to Ireland to discover the hardships of the famine, his brother having been executed in his absence, the persecution of his people by the very nation on behalf of whom he'd been fighting, and other atrocities. Enraged, he seeks revenge...

Interestingly, he's seen to possess a kukri knife (associated with the Nepalese/Gurkhas) but there's no reference as to why or how he came to own one... certainly not from uAfghanistan.

Although powerful, it does plod along at times but engrossing nevertheless.

My appraisal is to award a 7.5 star rating. However, as there is no half-star option, I'll err (as per my usual policy) downwards to a 7.
