Murky writing, solid action

Warning: Spoilers
BLADE OF FURY is a rather typical wuxia movie of the mid 1990s, enlivened by strong fight choreography and excellent attention to set design and realisation. The film has a prominent director in the form of Sammo Hung, making the very best of the resources he has to work with, and an ensemble cast that includes no fewer luminaries than former cop star Cynthia Khan and Shaw Brothers legend Ti Lung, not to mention an up-and-coming Collin Chou. The main problem with it is the confused scripting, which is all over the place but essentially about an effort to get rid of a corrupt Ching dowager in favour of a new, enlightened regime. Things kick off with a fantastic attack on a Japanese camp by the outlaw hero, before moving into slow and murky political intrigue territory. A kung fu tournament enlivens things, but it's the violent and gory climax that really stands out here.
