7/10
The 20 Year Old Charles Boyer
7 July 2019
Making his film debut, an almost unrecognisably lean young Charles Boyer (wearing silent era eye shadow) features prominently among the bad crowd spoilt brat Jaque Catelain hangs out with in this atmospheric Balzac adaptation shot in the summer of 1920 (and somewhat resembling a 50's German heimatfilm) against the majestic backdrop of the rocky Breton coast.

First seen torturing a crab, the prodigal son eventually learns to treat ocean life with the respect it properly deserves.
