4/10
Standard western comedy two-reeler
18 July 2019
Pistol Packin' Nitwits was the final Columbia short to both star El Brendel and Harry Langdon and it's essentially a western-themed comedy with either star barely hitting the mark. Brendel and Langdon are traveling medicine men who help a spitfire bar owner Christine McIntyre defend it from a gang of outlaws, as well as meeting B-western star Brad King as the indestructable hero of the film. Harry Edwards, who was notorious for being the unit's worst director, was fired midway through production and fledgling sound mixer Edward Bernds (who also shared story credit with Langdon) was hired to direct additional scenes, but he later admitted he was not proud of the finished product and dubbed it "a Columbia mistake", but Bernds would direct a number of entertaining Columbia two-reelers for the next seven years.
