My Review- The Kitchen Rating 7/10

I can't believe some of the negative reviews I've seen about this movie, considering its Andrea Berloff's directorial debut I'd like to see more movies from her.

Take no notice of bad reviews this movie is a celebration of very talented women and apart from one or 2 puzzling storyline details is a very entertaining gender reversal of a gangster movie where the women reign supreme and rule the mob for a change.

Based on a comic book by Jimmy Brennan the movie is set in Hell's Kitchen area New York between 8th Ave. And the Hudson River. These days a trendy artistic lifestyle area but in 1970 a high crime area where gangsters ran protection rackets and harass the local business owners to pay up or risk robbery or worse. The Irish mafia runs 20 blocks of Hell's Kitchen and the Italian mafia the rest.

The first half of this movie is excellent we see the 3 wives Kathy Brennan played so well by Melissa McCarthy , she really has impressed me recently and is cast aa Ruby O'Connell a mother of 2 whose life comes off the rails when her husband is arrested and gaoled.

Tiffany Haddish an Afro American actress in her first major role plays Ruby O'Carroll the wife of a gangster thug married to the mob and also in prison.

Then fabulous Elizabeth Moss as Claire Walsh married to a violent wife beater.

The three women have to find a way to make ends meet when their husbands are sent to prison after being captured by Police during a violent robbery.

Kathy comes up with an ingenious solution to their plight after the mob boss , whose promised to look after them pays them a pittance that won't even cover rent.

This film is worth seeing just for the performances of the women , especially Elizabeth Moss who plays a woman that's been violently downtrodden and devalued by men all her life and has a chance at last for revenge and also finds romance at the same time. Her character is veryTarantino esq and Elizabeth Moss is one actress I'd pay to see in any movie Her character in The Kitchen is the most compelling and believable .

The only character that did perplex me a little was Tiffany Haddish as Ruby I just thought the puzzling script plot twist made her unbelievable and concentrated more on her fashion transformation than her character.

In a supporting role Margo Martindale as Ruby's mother in law from hell Helen O'Carrol is wonderfully vicious .

In my opinion The Kitchen is far superior to last years Lynda La Plante film adaptation of The Widows based along similar lines.

Go see it and judge for yourselves.
