Well Acted, But Too Understated
12 November 2019
After David & Katie Marks move back to New York City, all I wanted to do for the rest of the film is turn a light bulb on. It is far too over-directed in this manner. I think both Frank Langella & Kirsten Dunst give absolutely terrific performances. However, it is truly wasted by the direction. As far as Ryan Gosling, this role fits him well. I have never seen him overplay a role. It suits him well here. In nearly every film I have seen him in, he underplays virtually all of them. Sometimes, he needs to talk a little more. Try as he might, he will never be Steve McQueen. I honestly believe he has gone far too overboard in this manner. Please don't misunderstand; he's a very good actor. I loved his performance in "The Place Beyond The Pines" (an epic film), along with Dane DeHaan's & Eva Mendes, as well. I believe that is where they met & became a couple ever since. This film is so melancholy it puts you to sleep. It's too bad. Like I wrote before, I blame the direction. 100%.
