Gentefied (2020–2021)

Worth watching with an open mind

First of all, I'm 100% for ANY positive Latin representation in the media. For some reason, Latin comedies and sit-coms just don't tend to do well on TV...and Gentefied underscores why. I think most families can sympathize with a flawed but lovable patriarch, a family business, younger generation that can't seem to find their place, etc. But the fact that this is set in Boyle Heights/East LA doesn't mean it needs to be militant and say "viva la raza!!!" in every other sentence. The sad reality is, like "East Los High", the only way such Latin-themed shows get put on the air is if they pander to the ultra-leftist Hollywood narrative (i.e. lesbian relationships, women talking about "gender is a social construct", frequent references to "toxic masculinity" etc) which means even though this is a series by Latinos, with Latino actors...it isn't at all what real life is for most Latin people in the US (or East LA). Like I said, I enjoyed some of the themes, and I'm hoping more people do as well...I just think they need to tone down the propaganda (FYI, it's Latino, Latina or just Latin if you're speaking English...LatinX is a made up term to colonize Romance languages with a political agenda) if they really want to make this a hit as opposed to a radical sounding-board. There really are some good performances here, so I'd say with all the caveats in mind, give this show a watch.
