Brilliant first season - average second

Warning: Spoilers
Agree with the consensus here - first series is brilliant. Second series is an okay watch but nowhere near the same quality (Maxine Peake is brilliant as always though).

The first series is gripping and dramatic. The American's have made their own version - 'The Night Of' which I had seen before this. This for me ruined some of the suspense of the first episode, making it difficult for me to compare - but I feel the Night Of did a better job of bulking suspense and shock in the first episode but the story then fell away and didn't maintain the explosive start. This in the other hand built throughout; with some excellent acting. The stories also end differently and I much preferred the British version; which provides closure and tells the viewer who actually did it - something you are robbed of in the Night Of.

Second season is by no means a bad watch but it's not as good. Whilst there is a heart breaking story at its core - it's not as gripping, Is very very odd in places and I'd also agree With other comments on here that it's incredibly long and drawn out. This story could have been told In half the time. I found myself by the end Willing them to get on with it and just tell us what happened.
