Gabriel & Me (2001)

Warning: Spoilers
I bought this dvd because of the writer and the appearance of Bill C, thinking that he's never been in a dud movie. Wrong. The idea is ok - unhappy kid thinks he will be loved more and able to help more if he's an angel, but it doesn't work. The kid is a misfit with his peers, he lives with his parent and granddad, and only granddad seems to have time for him. Dad, we learn, has lost his job, but has also contracted lung cancer. Mum works in a canteen and tries to support dad, who is a narrow minded prick. The kid really doesn't fit in anywhere, so he dodges into a disused church, where Billy C turns up as the angel Gabriel, complete with toenail polish and a Scottish accent. For some reason the kid finds a dress made of feathers and decides that this will help his quest. etc etc. etc.

It's long, it's tedious and depressing. It's not hard to see why it was a flop (there are only 5 reviews on IMDB which is a pointer). I can't think of a way to make it more palatable - you can't fault the location, the cast or the dialogue. It must be the story. Too downbeat - with the inevitable comparison to Billy Elliott, there was humour in that and an upbeat ending.

I'm sorry, I really tried to like this, but it's really depressing.
