Review of Stateless

Stateless (2020)
Important topic, but very poorly done
1 September 2020
This is an important topic, and I strongly support the rights of asylum seekers. I am also Australian and would love to say something positive about an Australian series. But this series is both trite and unconvincing. The story line is weak - unsure about its focus; as concerned about an exceptional example of detention as it is about its ostensible subject. The direction is appalling - unrealistic fight scenes, depiction of police, public servants and asylum seekers. Do your homework. Casting? Well, I really don't know where to start. The depiction (caricature) of the Maori/islander staff member? The young male guard (feebly protecting himself in the corner as a woman throws pillows at him)? The police? Oh, yes, perhaps the 'preacher', unsure of what language he is speaking? Looking at the speed of the final credits, it appears that those involved seem to concur..............
