Spin-off's and prequels from successful sitcoms are hard to pull off. Just ask Scott Silveri and Shana Goldberg Meehan, who could write the next biggest show on TV, and would still be known as the people who headed up the 'Joey' spin-off.

I think Chuck Lorre has been smart with 'Young Sheldon', and this pilot proves it. It's different enough to 'Big Bang Theory', and yet in the excellent casting of Iain Armitage have found the perfect person to play the younger version of Sheldon Cooper, surrounding him with lots of other engaging characters. The fact that it started airing as almost a companion piece to 'Big Bang Theory' rather than wait for that show to finish was a smart move too.

Pilots are never perfect, but this episode showed enough promise that this idea could work.
