Still holds up well for what it is
9 December 2020
I haven't watched any DuckTales episodes since the early 90s when the original TV show went off the air, so I was more than a little apprehensive to return to this movie that spun off from that series. I was happy to see that it still held up surprisingly well. Of course, because Treasure of the Lost Lamp is targeted towards kids, the movie isn't a groundbreaking work of art. The storyline is predictable, and I think there are moments when it drags on too long, and other moments when it rushes too fast. The overall pacing is a little off and favors the more cute and playful moments that children would enjoy, rather than the serious storytelling that keeps the movie on a good narrative path. But the storyline works, and I didn't even feel that I needed to be reintroduced to the characters after all these years away from the series. Perhaps most surprising is that this film has a number of similarities to Aladdin, a movie that Disney released 2 years later. My biggest complaint was simply that I don't enjoy Rip Taylor's voice as the Genie. He's a little obnoxious, and doesn't sound like the young kid that the animators showed on the screen. Otherwise, I was happy that DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp still provided a fun and entertaining adventure that held my interest for its short runtime.
