Great play. So so film. You stay with it 'cause Robert Anderson's writing is sharp and perceptive (albeit utterly without humor) about father/son relationships as well as the travails of aging, and Hackman and Douglas are flat out brilliant. Cinematically, though, it's got all the feel of a 60s Hallmark Hall Of Fame production, (i.e. You keep expecting the screen to go dark and a greeting card commercial to appear) while the music is both lovely at times and cloying at most other times. Give it a C plus. PS...Nice to see Blanche and Buck Barrow, born again in Connecticut, as sensitive Yuppies.
