LAMARR & THE MEN WHO LOVE HER...!
20 May 2021
A 1947 Hedy Lamarr (that's Hedley) vehicle where she plays an art director at an important magazine but suffers from poor choices w/men to the point she even tries to take her own life when she crashes her car into a home. That the home is owned by a psychiatrist (what luck!) who's willing to counsel her back to mental fitness only goes so far when she beds down w/an important client leaving such a bad taste in her mouth she ups & quits, relocating to a modest apartment, run by Margaret Hamilton, where she engages w/a scientist who lives on another floor. He throws some work her way (he's doing some research & wants her to illustrate some of his specimen slides) & even some love but then the specter of her old client rears his ugly head when he hires a private eye to find her (she comes into the apartment one day to find him sitting there) & also her old co-workers (one of whom is a thief) manage to run into her culminating in a drunken night out where she finds herself at the client's apartment & then, twists & turns, he's found dead & she's accused of the crime & put on trial for the murder. Her scientist beau is outraged about her past but her kindly head doc hopes to convince him to forgive & forget but will he when he's put on the stand to testify on her behalf? Definitely a Lamarr film from end to end w/just about every scene an excuse for her to do a costume change (where she looks fabulous!) but the campiness of the story-line takes the potential edge off this female bent on this upwardly mobile yarn but if you can stand the archness of the material, you'll be fine. Also starring Natalie Schafer (Lovey from Gilligan's Island) as Lamarr's friend & co-worker.
