This was not at all what I was expecting, and it was a wonderful surprise! I realize it was filmed almost 50 years ago, and although I was around at that time, it still seems amazingly timely today. I don't think Brother John's "identity" is ever fully disclosed, and that's okay. The movie was entertaining, thought provoking, historically accurate, and full of topics to be mulled over, as much for their place in our country's history as in our present-day culture. And, of course, Sidney Poitier is always a joy to watch!
