This is an interesting story, particularly because it is supposed to be based on real people. The matter-of-fact, almost casual way that the story tells belies the rather gruesome events that seem to unfold in slow motion. This certainly cannot be called a horror film in the true sense of the word, despite the horrific things that occur. What sticks with me most is the final monologue given by the Countess herself. It says a lot about that period of time, which is actually not that much different than attitudes today. Very worthwhile film to watch overall.
