I honestly didn't get this movie. All the praise seems to come from the last 15 minutes. If you took those 15 minutes off you'd have a 4 where as if you took off the first 75 minutes you'll get the same reaction, tears and praise.
It's possible something is lost in translation from 1937 to 2021. Stella is supposed to be "low class"? Stephen apparently wants a different kind of woman. They seem to be trying to portray Stella as irresponsible because she wants to have fun times but she's clearly not irresponsible as she does great taking care of her daughter.
Yes I teared up at the end but it felt out of place with the rest of the movie. Compare to "To Each His Own" (1946) which is another movie about a mother sacrificing for her child. That movie, the entire movie fits together leading to a tear jerking climax. This movie doesn't fit together nearly as well.
