Review of The Omen

The Omen (2006)
6/10
Right time/timing (?)

Almost every horror movie that was once succesful is ripe to get a remake, reboot or some sort of sequel. Some even get some or all of these things. The Omen is rightfully considered a classic - the original that is. And while we do get quite a good cast assembled here and it updates certain things (with an introduction/explanation right at the beginning, before the ... birth), it never achieves or reaches any heights the original set as goal posts and standard.

Liev Schreiber really does his best - and while you may still think he never even comes close to Gregory Peck, he does a really good job. Julia Stiles role is a bit underwhelming and really unthankful. The boy cast is ok, but has nothing on the original boy. David Thawlis on the other hand can be set on the same level as David Warner. A high level that is, before you say or feel offended.

There are some extended and more bloody scenes in the deleted scenes section, which are nice to see, but do not really elevate this movie. The original Omen was able to make people run to the church ... times have changed, I doubt this had an impact anywhere near that. Even though the marketing campaing for it was extremely good mind you - and with a release date of (0)6/(0)6/(0)6 ... well what could go wrong, right? In any case, stick with the original, which really is one of the milestones and has aged very well.
