Chicago Party Aunt (2021–2022)
7/10
90s style comedy - you had to be there.

Drawing from the successful Rick and Morty template, CPA teams awkward gay nephew Daniel with his banged-out party aunt Diane in this surprisingly entertaining adult cartoon. A lot of the criticism of this show is that it's comedy is dated and it is, but I think that's the point. I was young in the 90s so it resonates with me but I can see how younger viewers would find it tiresome. She's not likeable and likeability seems to be key in keeping the younger demographic.

While it's great that no big deal is made out of the nephew being gay, it also limits the storyline. If the nephew were a straight young woman it could've have opened up lots of possibilities for comparisons of men, dating, love and sex norms between the generations. The aunt could hang out with the nieces friends and see herself as some sort of Samantha from Sex and The City. Instead, we get the aunt taking Daniel to a gay bar on Halloween so he can have his first kiss, which was just silly. I'm pretty sure that any gay man can get that taken care of on an app.

Still, I found myself giggling at the show and the subtle visual puns - notice how the new-age manager of the juice bar is colored much paler than the other characters. Overall, it's a cute show that needs more contrasting characters to maintain longevity.
