A Happy Day in the Country for Spence and Stu
13 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I am impressed by the previous five user reviews of this film, capturing well the flavor and value of the film as they do. I can only say that the film is almost fantasy-like and full of inconceivable twists and turns, particularly after Marian Nixon arrives in NYC; how she maneuvers her way through it in just a mere few hours to find Spencer Tracy after never having seen a building taller than a barn is a miracle. But through all the implausible components, including how country bumpkin Marian takes so easily to strangers, travel, and later to big city glamour, the movie moves along briskly and with much provided amusement.

It was irksome for a while to see that Spence's character was apparently so aloofly narcissistic that I wondered why Marian would trade one ogre's orders for another. But, of course, some of the rough edges on Spencer's character were somehow eventually smoothed out. Stuart Erwin's character was indeed pretty much useless except for allowing the viewers to better know Spence; Stu definitely did not get in the way of the picture (in some other actor's hands the role could have been annoying).

There was actually quite a lot of story developed with a variety of settings used (log cabins to the Empire State Bldg) in only a little over 60 minutes running time. In closing, this picture for me is one that I am actually coming to appreciate more as the hours go by after having watched it.
