"Life gives you many chances. Baseball gives you one."

Warning: Spoilers
If you watch a modicum of baseball, then you know how many Latin players are in the league. The most heavily represented Latin American countries in MLB have to be the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. One of your favorite baseball players is probably from one of these countries.

Miguel "Sugar" Santos (Algenis Perez Soto) was from the D. R. He was a promising young pitcher with big league dreams. "Sugar" takes a glimpse at the life of an aspiring baseball player from the D. R. (or any latin country) and what they may encounter once they get signed by a team.

If you're a sports fan, you know how cutthroat sports can be. It's a results oriented business and teams don't wait very long to see those results, especially if they didn't spend much money on you.

Miguel wasn't producing and his stock was dropping. He had two options once things got rough: fight through it or quit.

Unfortunately, he chose to quit; and I think that was the worst part of the movie. Failing at something is one thing, everybody fails at some point, but quitting is a choice that's not looked on favorably by many unless you're quitting smoking. I'm not calling Miguel a quitter, though it would be easy to, I'm saying he took the easy road out. At the same time, "Sugar" showed us how tough it can be on a player, and the mental make up you have to have to make it. It makes you appreciate those who made it all the more--especially those who made it after struggling.
