Geeking out about Freaks and Geeks

Warning: Spoilers
Recently I've been into more 70s-90s themed stuff. Whether it be music, graphic tees, or shows, I've definitely been looking into these eras more. So when I saw Freaks and Geeks, it immediately caught my attention.

I was born in the year 2000. I can't tell you what it was like going to high school in the late 70s to early 80s, I can't reminisce on what happened during that time. But what I can tell you is that Freaks and Geeks is one of the best shows I've ever seen.

.The story follows two sets of groups, the Freaks, and the Geeks, and how they go about their daily lives in high-school. The Geeks are your typical portrayal of a "geek," they're into Dungeons and Dragons, enjoy comics, and are socially awkward. The Freaks are considered the burnouts of the school who are "too cool for school." While the plot seems mundane, director Judd Apatow does an excellent job of throwing in scenarios that are able to spice up the show while keeping it realistic.

The performances by the cast helped too, as a majority of the cast were still teenagers or young adults. You have your two main characters in the show Sam (John Francis Daley) who's a geek, and his sister Lindsay (Linda Cardellini.) Because of this we have a handful of interactions between both groups like the time Sam got egged by the Freaks. Lindsay didn't know it was him and we get a nice scene when they're both home. We can visually tell that this has an effect on Lindsay and later on in the show we see how this changes her.

Realistic events with realistic cause and effect. Sure, the comedy is strong, and the cast is bar none, but without the writing this show would just be any old portrayal of high-school. The show is full of episodes like this, where our characters are put in hilarious, awkward, and at times saddening situations, and we see how they deal with it.

Fans of disco and rock will absolutely ADORE the soundtrack here and it's implemented in ways that made sense. Some shows/movies like to throw in a classic song just so you'd say "Hey! I know that song!" But no, here, you have scenes where the music is actually implemented into the story. A few notable artists here were Billy Joel, Cream, and Heatwave

I love this show but like everything, it has its flaws. It's clear that the show is more focused on being a good depiction of the 80s, but with that comes insensitive moments that I and others have felt uncomfortable watching. Some characters made sexist, homophobic, or ableist comments. There's scenes later in the show where these characters have a realization and start to correct how they view each subject, but it takes a few episodes to get to them and some people may not want to sit through that. Overall though I'd say that this show was an amazing time, and I'll definitely be revisiting it again. Anyone who enjoys shows about high-school or shows set in the 80s will have a blast while watching Freaks and Geeks.
