SummerSlam 2005 Thoughts

SummerSlam 2005 was the 18th annual SummerSlam event produced by the WWE. It took place on August 21, 2005 at the MCI Center in Washington DC with an attendence of 18,176. Quick fact, first PPV event to take place at this Stadium since Backlash 2000 as WCW mostly was the promotion to have major events at this arena due to deals. Little complicated fact but WWF/WCW had major competition with one another when it came to hosting locations. Anyway the main headline of this event was the dream matchup of HBK vs. Hulk Hogan. WWE build this as a once in a lifetime. We also had 2 major title matches from Raw and Smackdown as well as the classic Custody of Dominick storyline between Rey Mysterio & Eddie Guerrero. This would also be the last Major PPV Appearance of Eddie Guerrero.

The Good - I thought the 3 most important matches didn't disappoint. All could have been better but they still were good. Although it was predictable of Jericho losing to Cena due to at the time of the contract, the match was fun and the crowd was hot. Batista vs. JBL was actually good for a brawl. The two are not the best in-ring works in history but they kept the crowd into it. Match for a brawl lacked weapons. I would say in the mid card, Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero was the best match of the night but some botches stopped it from being an instant classic. Hogan vs. HBK was better than expected depite the overselling of HBK due to controversial decision of choice of winner.

The Meh - Randy Orton vs. Undertaker was somewhat decent but it's early slow pacing and ending to continue the story was a blow. I mentioned earlier of Rey and Eddie having numerous botching. Rey hadn't been in many ladder matches in his career so Eddie obviously had to carry on. Some odd timing issues also happened that made everyone confused.

The Bad - Edge vs. Matt Hardy didn't go well as the story build. I always hate to rewatch this as Edge being one of my favorites of all time really did get heat from fans out of Kayfabe for being the one to be pushed as the winner of this feud despite what happened with him, Matt Hardy, and Lita. The match ending in a no contest was stupid. Kurt Angle didn't deserve to be in a match with Eugene. He was clearly being wasted right here.

Overall - A pretty good show. It delivered the theme of the show well of SummerSlam being the hottest and big event of the summer. Not one of the best PPVs of all time but very enjoyable.

Score - 7 out of 10: Good

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time :

1. Chris Benoit vs. Orlando Jordan: WWE United States Championship - Not Worth It

2. Edge vs. Matt Hardy - 0/5

3. Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio: Custody of Dominick (Ladder Match) - 4/5

4. Kurt Angle vs. Eugene: Olympic Gold Medal - 1.5/5

5. Randy Orton vs. Undertaker - 2.5/5

6. Chris Jericho vs. John Cena: WWE Championship - 3.5/5

7. Batista vs. JBL: World Heavyweight Championship (No Holds Barred) - 3/5

8. Shawn Michaels vs. Hulk Hogan - 3.5/5

Best Match - Eddie vs. Rey Mysterio

Worst Match - Orlando Jordan vs. Chris Benoit. I normally don't count these as an actual match but whatever.

Most Memorable Moment - Honestly HBK's oversells. I mean I think of that every time I hear this PPV

Top 5 Performers

1. Eddie Guerrero - Great Heel and carried the match

2. Rey Mysterio - Good Performance

3. John Cena - Good Performance

4. Chris Jericho - Good Performance. Also leaving soon and did a good farewell run.

5. Hulk Hogan - Still had the charisma.
