Child's Play 3
21 March 2022
The Child's Play series takes an eight year jump as Chucky targets a now teenaged Andy Barclay, trying to transfer his soul into his body yet again.

The film begins at the same factory that 'Child's Play 2' ended on. As Play Pal Corporation begins to open up the deserted building to begin production of more dolls (yet again), a single drop of Chucky's blood gets mixed in with the plastic used to create the new version of the Good-Guy dolls. This seems to revive Chucky as a newly made doll comes to life and kills the CEO of the company. Meanwhile, Andy Barclay (now 16-years old) has been sent to a military academy after being deemed a trouble foster child over the past eight years.

At the academy, Andy encounters bullies, makes a friend in a young boy named Tyler, and also finds a love interest in Kristin. Andy's friend Tyler becomes Chucky's latest target as Chucky realizes transferring his soul into Tyler's body may prove to be easier as Tyler is a bit of a pushover. Can Andy protect his new friend from a fate he's ran from for a decade, or will Chucky finally complete his mission? All is revealed in the final act which takes place at a nearby carnival.

Man oh man, was 'Child's Play 3' a disappointment after watching the second film. I didn't expect it to live up to the original, but this one wasn't even close. Aging Andy was a fail for me. Justin Whalen did his best, but without Alex Vincent, I felt no connection with the characters from parts one and two. It felt like an entirely different person. The military storyline and theme throughout the first hour or so was also tedious to sit through. The military academy staff were horrible people that you just didn't care about. The saving grace of 'Child's Play 3' was the last twenty minutes at the carnival and the chase scene that ensued with Chucky versus Kristin/Andy/Tyler. Very well done by the director and writers. Sadly, the first hour was devoid of any excitement.

Justin Whalen took on the role of Andy Barclay and did a pretty decent job overall. As I said before, without Alex Vincent for me it just didn't connect this film to the first two. They almost should've just scrapped continuing the Andy storyline if they were going to age the character and change actors to be honest. Brad Dourif was excellent as always, voicing the Chucky character. Chucky definitely had some of the most comedic dialogue in the series to this point, which only gets better and better as the series introduces his bride and his seed with the following sequels.

'Child's Play 3' was a very average entry to what was a fun series up to this point. You could tell that the creators of the franchise were running out of ideas with this one. It bombed at the theatres which is likely why we didn't get a 4th film until seven years later, a film which dropped the Andy Barclay plot all together.

5/10.
