Richard Zanuck's final movie as a producer - released three years after his death, in fact - is a sweeping look at the career of blues singer Bessie Smith. Queen Latifah puts her all into the role of Smith, showing Smith's talent, personal problems, and relationships with both genders.
The movie probably could've covered more of Smith's life - and also could've mentioned that Janis Joplin donated money to give Smith a headstone - but overall I thought it did a fine job focusing on her contributions to music, as well as her political stances.
Also starring Michael Kenneth Williams (who died last year), Mo'Nique, Charles S. Dutton and Mike Epps.
