At Home with the Brannigans
18 April 2022
I'm always pleasantly surprised when this continues to turn up on TV as I thought that with a title like that all the usual disclaimers are rendered unnecessary and it would have disappeared long ago.

Declared by Basil Fawlty his favourite film, like the Benny Hill Show it's the men who are portrayed most unflatteringly and a line like "Marriage is not a basic fact of nature, it's an invention" could just have easily been written by Andrea Dworkin.

Enlivened by a jolly score by Neil Hefti, Terry-Thomas and Eddie Mayehoff enjoy themselves in supporting roles; while Claire Trevor as the latter's lawful wedded nightmare is permitted to demonstrate that glamour doesn't end at fifty. (The scenes in which she enthusiastically bonds in Italian with Virna Lisi reinforces men's long-held suspicion that when alone together women speak in a language all their own.)
