Review of The Ambushers

The Ambushers (1967)
7/10
Sadly this is a product of its time.

Spoof or not, it shows the values of the times. What amazes me is that years ago I would have given this movie a 10. I though it far better then Bond due to its difference to Bond. As much as no one can match Sean Connery, at the time, Dean Martin topped him with Matt Helm. Unfortunately, it does not hold up over time. It shows the underlying current of the bad values that have hit real life society today. I found it funny that Matt is dissuaded from a married woman though the female characters are all fawning over him. It shows the conflicted values of society at that time with the older and younger generation. I suppose it is more difficult to separate fantasy in this movie while the anti establishment values of that time as expressed in this movie has impacted today's society in such a negative fashion. I gave it a seven because there are a number of enjoyable scenes regardless of its values.

Another thing that has surprised me is that Dean does not come across as polished as I remembered him being. He is far more personable in his personal appearances than as an actor in many of his films. Lastly, Albert Salmi gave me the creeps back then and more so now. There is something with that guy that seems off, very off.
