One of the great mysteries of whaling is why . . .

. . . Scotland never distinguished itself as a world power when it came to harpooning the Blubber Boys. SHEEP DOG goes a long way toward explaining this Scottish historical deficiency. As anyone familiar with the nautical annals of such whaling powers as England and Japan well knows, the Blimps Below frequently fought back by sinking Captains Ahab's mother ships. Subsequently, the whalers' life boats invariably ran out of food after eight or twelve weeks, and they were seldom equipped with bait, fish hooks or scaling spoons. At this juncture the survivors would draw straws and shoot the short man out. Then Filet of Crew Mate would allow the luckier guys to persist as long as the short straws lasted. As SHEEP DOG illustrates when Coyote Senior chows down on Coyote Junior at the close, ANYTHING is more palatable than mutton, the staple of the Scottish diet. Therefore, each time a Scottish whaling ship sank, the returning survivors invariably came back as incurable, committed-for-life cannibals, just like Coyote Senior here.
