7/10
Great Movie with a Glaring Weakness
5 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is an enjoyable movie. With a great cast of likeable characters. Even the film's "bad guys" are quite a likeable bunch. It also has an entertaining way of setting up the fights you see later on, through the bickering of the husband and wife duo. It would be a 9/10 movie if it did not have one major, glaring weakness.

This is a Shaw Brothers movie, which sadly means it is a movie that is a victim of its time. Though the ending is good, it gets hammered in multiple times that Japanese Martial Arts and philosophies may be good but Chinese Martial Arts and way of thinking are better. Which is sad since this is a movie about 2 familiar but different cultures meeting, about a proud Chinese man marrying a string willed Japanese woman. They bicker, make fun of and share each other's cultures. Even the main character learns about his wife's culture through his fights and even learns to respect the Japanese fighters. So it is very disappointing when the ending does address misunderstandings between the two but does not mitigate the Chinese superiority over Japanese message pervading throughout the movie.

Other than that, it would definitely a good movie.
