Down Among the Z Men

An early attempt to bring the Goons humour to the cinema screens is a miss.

Professor Pureheart (Michael Bentine) is the eccentric scientist who has mislaid a top secret formula. Harry Jones (Harry Secombe) is an incompetent shop assistant and a bit part actor who thinks he is a private eye, Bats of the Yard.

Jones has been tricked by two criminals pretending to be cops to find the nutty professor. Spike Milligan is Private Eccles and Peter Sellers plays it straight as Colonel Bloodnok.

Jones ends up in an army camp while a British secret agent has been sent to guard the professor.

There is a variety show element to the movie with dancing girls and a few song numbers.

Of course it is meant to be silly and goonish. It was not written by Spike Milligan and the story is flimsy.

Sadly like a lot of Goons humour this has dated badly.

Peter Sellers shows his star quality though.
