Super Mario Galaxy (2007 Video Game)
10/10
The best video game of all time
20 July 2022
Super Mario Galaxy, was the first entry for the Wii in terms of the mainline mario series, and the third 3d mario game. Expectations for the next game at the time were more simplistic and exploratory than the game's final product. And this game is so unique and crazy, that compared to the other mainline games, does it stay in place? I wouldn't say so, but this is what makes it brilliant.

This game has the word galaxy in it. If Sunshine sounds like a sunny place, then galaxy should be a spacy place. And it succeeds at that at such a brilliant level. The atmosphere is the best in Super Mario Galaxy, than compared to any other game. The realism you feel at some levels is astonishing, and one of the main reasons why the game feels so complete, fresh and exciting.

Along with that, we can't forget about what all games need. Gameplay! And once again, it doesn't disappoint. The sheer fun of traveling through space, exploring, finding bosses, seeing new themes and solving puzzles is unbelievable. The amount of fun in this game is the best in the mario series tied with its sequel.

But there's one last thing that truly separates this game from everything else, the presentation. The music, the climax, the cutscenes, the story and everything else that is related to it are done to perfection. The soundtrack is better than most movie soundtracks and the best video game soundtrack of all time. Good Egg, Comet Observatory, Battlerock, Space Junk, Buoy Base, Gusty Garden, Melty Molten, Beachbowl, Honeyhive, Megaleg, Star Festival, Gateway, Red Star Flight, Enter the Galaxy, Enter Bowser Jr., Bouldergeist, Ghostly are some superb songs that are truly unbelievable and completely original.

The main story and vibe behind the game is one that describes space beautifully, and the climax and cutscenes are the best in this game. The best way to represent it is by the final boss. Good luck finding a better final boss in any video game!

And then there are so many other things, but the way this game feels about space whilst also being revolutionary and having brilliant level design and when you add that with the presentation, this game is truly the best of all time.

You might hear people say that Galaxy 2 improved on this in a lot of aspects, but that isn't necessarily true either. I found the level design in the first to be better, the accommodation and integration of gimmicks, and the way you're swiftly introduced to them, and use them later on make this even better. And crucially the game still has exploratory elements all over the game. Almost every core galaxy has an exploratory function to it, whether that be searching for star chips, obtaining star bits and having spherical planets to fully explore, along with more space given to you than in the 2nd game in planets, this has slightly better level design. And the 2nd game lost the charm of this game, the atmosphere and presentation are nothing compared to this game. The music is still astonishing in the 2nd game, but the first game still has a better soundtrack, as SMG2's soundtrack doesn't feel original enough.

Regardless of the 2nd game, this is the best Mario game, and a bit more controversially, the best video game of all time.
