Pauline at the Beach
22 September 2022
Marion, a divorced, attractive woman, looking for love, takes her 15 year old cousin Pauline to a beach in Normandy for a break. An admirer of hers, Pierre latches on, but Marion is drawn to the older Henri. Meanwhile, Pauline starts seeing Sylvian and learns all about matters of the heart as she watches the 3 adults make a complete hash of it.

Wildly admired though Rohmer is, to me this seemed to be a hugely contrived almost chamber piece, featuring mostly unsympathetic, rather naive, sociopathic individuals drawn endlessly to having intense conversations on matters of amour, usually requiring excessive and unrealistic mood swings during the course of their frequent debates. Sweet in places and Amanda Langlet as Pauline helps ground this but the other leads fail to convince. Over valued.
