Cassie Keller (Emily Osment) is a 13 year-old goth, more attractive than she thinks, trying her best to fit in at a new school. She enjoys to read, but most of all playing pranks on popular kids at school and younger brother Max (Alex Winzenread) is too easy for her. Halloween is coming and Cassie searches and finds an unusual book called The Evil Thing. "Don't Read Aloud" is given the warning, she ignores. A harmless reading to Max, summons a monster and a scary adventure of things with it. A squabble with Cassie's school rival (Brittany Curran) leads to some spooky retaliations.
