Cameos and a historic event
26 December 2022
JOHN AND JULIE isn't a bad film but it does feel a little rushed and cheaply made at times; you wonder if it was made purely as a tie-in for the Coronation, which features heavily at the climax. Like many a Children's Film Foundation production, it follows a couple of precocious kids as they stray from home and go to witness the London event for themselves. Certainly there's a documentary feel to the film's background, and for adults there's a lot of fun from spotting the various familiar faces in the cast, not least Megs Jenkins and Sid James playing the parents. Along the way we meet Peter Sellers and Wilfred Hyde-White, too.
