Imagine the movie Antichrist just in a war manner, that's what this movie kinda is. A grieving couple together struggling. The movie is a history lesson about what occurred during the wars, there's actual war footage in this film briefly.
As stated grieving couple: Husband came from the war, without his hands, and legs, and is paralyzed and can not speak at all. Nobody knows that the real reason why he is paralyzed is because of his rape of a Chinese woman, and the flames burned them both. Everyone is treating him as a God, cuz he fought the war. While his wife is trying to provide the best she can for him. Both of them spiral into madness. They argue constantly. The husband has always been abusive we learn that in the end.
The movie is very slow. There's not a lot of stuff going on. It's the couple not being able to work stuff out after the husband got back the way he did.
There isn't a lot of depth in these characters. I think what could have benefited the movie if he had 20 minutes of a backstory, to maybe get our characters to be developed a bit more.
The only negative i can give this movie is its length. The movie keeps hitting the same points over and over again, the movie could have been probably 20 minutes shorter. But that won't kill the movie to you.
I never was bored during the movie, but it is a slow-paced film. Pretty much the movie is divided in three segments: The beginning, the middle and the ending. Crazy how during the two segments everyone worked so hard, you had everyone outside, and then when they lost, nobody was outside, except maybe two people. And obviously, after the Japanese lost the main character ends it all because he wasted his whole life on ultimate failure.
I LOVED the two movies about Japan in World War 2 that's Man Behind the Sun and Grave of the Fireflies. Go check this out of curiosity and if you liked slower movies, they just showcase grief like AntiChrist.
