On the question of Verden and Rowena

Warning: Spoilers
I'll be frank, I'm very biased with this review. My Mother, Elizabeth Shepherd, stars as Rowena/Ligeia in this film. I was literally a babe in arms on the set of this film. I grew up with this film. I love this film. From the moment I was old enough to watch it, and understand it, it was obvious, to me, that Rowena and Verden Fell have a deep attraction and love. This presumption, in the trailer and some of these reviews, that it's inexplicable, due to the age difference, or him being a loner after Ligeia's death, is missing the point. Given Rowena's background, with her very conventional, upper-crust father and fiancé, it's no surprise that she finds Verden Fell very compelling. He's handsome, he's intriguing, he literally picks her up in his arms and sees to her wounds. She pursues him, leading to the jump cut of the wedding. But then the obsession, and possession, continues. The "Will" dinner scene is something I'd treasure, even if it wasn't my mother absolutely nailing the two characters.

As a side note, I'll mention that it annoyed me that the TV showings in the 1970s often cut out the 'Nightmare Scene' to make it fit into '90 minutes + commercials', which made her horror at seeing those scenes replicated in reality bizarre.

And, finally, my mother has had the privilege of acting with many fine actors and stars, but Vincent Price has always been at the top of that list.
