Joys of an Ordinary Life

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, I'm really not all that much of a fan of romantic comedies, especially big name ones like this one, but I have to say that the whole concept of this film did capture me. Basically, it is the story of this Maths teacher that is struggling to connect with his daughter, and is basically living alone after a somewhat amicable divorce. In a way, he somewhat suffers for a lack of self-esteem, which I have to admit is completely different to the typical Owen Wilson character that I have seen.

Anyway, he is persuaded to come of a concert where a couple of big music stars are going to perform a wedding ceremony while singing the hit song 'Marry Me'. However, just before the show begins, she learns that her fiance, Bastian, was having an affair, so completely distraught she picks a random guy from the crowd, which happens to be the maths teacher (who is holding his friend's Marry Me sign), and calls him up onto the stage to get married.

It certainly seems quite absurd, but honestly, this is pretty much the celebrity realm that we are speaking about. What happens though is that our maths teacher is suddenly swept into a realm that he really doesn't want to be in. However, the film actually goes further than that because it isn't actually about an ordinary person suddenly discovering that he is famous, but rather the celebrity superstar that is introduced to the joys of the ordinary world.

Like, I have to admit that this is actually one of those Hollywood themes, and it is a theme that seems to have come across through multiple films - namely that there is something nice, and romantic, about the ordinary life. Okay, there are a lot of issues these days with trying to live an ordinary life, and I suspect that a Maths teacher in a public school in New York could actually afford to live an ordinary life, but let's put that aside at the moment.

Personally, I do appreciate how Hollywood does actually promote this, and it doesn't look down on the ordinary characters as well. In the same sense there is also this idea that marriage, and settling down with somebody is also a good and noble thing. It certainly sets this apart from the lives of the celebrities, and the fame and stardom that they have attached to them.

For instance, there is the idea that they simply cannot do anything without their entourage, and that their every waking hour is being recorded and uploaded to social media. Then there is the fact that they simply cannot be alone, or even walk into an ordinary place without hordes of people swarming to them. Personally, I would find that quite annoying, and not even after awhile, especially since I do really appreciate my alone time, but not alone time in my house, but wandering around outside as well.

Yeah, despite it being a romantic comedy, I have to say that this film was actually pretty good.
