Liaison (2023)
6/10
A potentially much better show let down by poor script writing and casting

There was quite a lot to like here. I thought that Vincent Cassel was good and I really liked the performances of Laëtitia Eïdo and Lyna Dubarry.

There was an inventive terrorist target and some good action scenes in terms of combat - although the budget did not stretch to anything more than a pencil sketch of the two disasters.

But the scenes between Eva Green and Daniel Francis were beyond unconvincing. I thought they were cringingly awkward. Given that they were in a five year (I think) relationship you would think that Alison would be able to embrace Albert in a way that didn't look like she was trying to attempt some sort of peculiar wrestling hold. The actors were not assisted by the unnatural scripting for these scenes, but I think that this was a casting mishap. I am not sure if they test out how actors work together before hiring, but if not maybe that should be de rigueur to save audiences's toes curling.

There are iconic locations but the filming failed to make the most of them. There was a lot of very mundane framing indeed and some choppy cutaways.

But I was engaged enough to watch the whole series and to see if I was right that Peter Mullan was a bad 'un (this was given away by some uncharacteristic grinning from him in early scenes, which immediately set alarm bells ringing)
