Scream VI (2023)
6/10
Bit of a mixed bag

I'm a huge fan of this series. This instalment left me wondering if I loved it or if I felt a little disappointed.

There's things I really like about this movie. The ante has been upped in a number of ways. The big apple setting is cool and there are a number of victims that have no ties to the main characters which feel a bit new. Ghost face takes one out with a shotgun which I enjoyed because it made him feel more terrifying like anything goes. There's all the usual meta commentary and plenty of Easter eggs. The subway scene was great. I love the aged look of the mask and I enjoyed both Samara Weaving's appearance and the return of Kirby Reed.

There's things I really didn't like though. For starters no Sydney Prescott but my main gripe is around people surviving significant wounds to the chest and stomach. That kind of miraculous movie healing always bothers me. One victim took one to the stomach, was sliced upwards and still had the strength to climb through a window and cling to a ladder. Blood pressure would have been so low that standing upright would have been impossible.

Aside from that I also didn't enjoy the killer unmasking. The motive and the means were the most stretched they have been in the series. I'd be interested to see a ghost face killer that had no motive, no pattern and no ties to the victims.

I also have always hated dream sequences and visions. Yet again Sam is having visions of Billy and she can even interact with him and I hate that.

Honestly I found Mindy Meeks super annoying too.

Finally there were a number of occasions where the main characters had an opportunity to incapacitate and unmask their assailant but instead opted for one smack with a frying pan and ran away.

It's certainly not a terrible movie and still has a lot going for it but this is not my favourite one by a long way.
