Unique, promising start but gets lost pretty quickly

"Based on a True Story" is a satire on the recent phenomenon of true crime junkies - those who obsess on following the latest podcasts and breaking news reports on grisly murders committed by people you least expect. The two lead actors Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina are capable and funny, both with their charms and deadpan comedic timing. Tom Bateman takes a bit to grow on me; I am not familiar with him before, but his sometimes-quirky pronunciations give away that he is not American but British. The show starts off with a uniquely creative premise for a satire. It is promising until the middle episodes when the series meanders into different themes losing its focus. Is this about sappy marriage troubles? We'e not interested. Is this about "Desperate Housewives" style of envy between couples? Yawn. We want more of the serial killer-themed satire that the show promises, which it somehow unwittingly abandons in the end.
