The girlfriend is very charming and engaging most of the time, but the boyfriend is frequently downcast, to such a degree that at one point the girlfriend gives up in despair. He is exasperating. Yes he is poor but he has a lovely girlfriend willing to have a fun day together, but he is constantly glass half full. The poster suggests it is a rom com, but it is more of a study of depression and post war social injustice That's fine as film, but it's not what it says on the tin.
It is well acted, especially so by the girlfriend and there are some nice moments such as the baseball and the mime of the cafe. There is a surprising moment of direct to camera speech which was moving and like another contributor I wonder how audiences reacted when the film came out.
But all in all I found it hard work due to the downbeat boyfriend.
