She Belongs To The Streets!

Its not hard to see why this was unpopular and also why it attracted such a good cast. Actors seem drawn to these "difficult" stories which have little interest for paying audiences.

This is yet another story of a college level ie middle class guy who falls for a white trash but pretty female and the resulting fall out from it. Only this is not a happy ever after movie, quite the opposite.

While the cinematography is great the rest of the movie simply isn't. Apparently this was based on a play and I have no idea how popular that was, but the major issue with this movie is it is simply not believable. No matter how 1980's hot Ringwald was supposed to be. There isn't really a sympathetic character in this, the guy seems absolutely clueless, he is apparently smitten by this girl yet he takes no interest in who she is. He knows nothing about her and we are supposed to believe just because its Molly Ringwald a university graduate surrounded by better women thinks she is his best choice? Ringwald's character is also fairly obnoxious, she is a walking red flag and pathological liar. She has no redeeming features whatsoever. The main character runs into her at some bizarre 1980's party house which seems to be filled with sleazy men getting drunk and barely if even legal girls while bands play in the living room, that 80's trope. The idea that middle class guys about to graduate would choose to go there when they have homes with swimming pools and horses to ride would end up in these environments is laughable. This has very similar themes and outcomes as the 90s Lolita remake. Its obviously trying to copy that idea albeit that the girl in this is 16 or over. The final scene is also somewhat laughable, as if anyone with a brain (particularly a student) would seriously date a girl like this. I think the makers of this movie were going for bittersweet but in 2023 men simply have more knowledge about women try to date and this movie would have ended in the first act. As the meme says, "she belongs to the streets". The only people who could find this movie entertaining or satisfying are those who have overly romantic notions about love and have little understanding of dating dynamics. Let alone how to choose a female partner. Certainly a dated movie of its time and yet another Ringwald as poor girl dates rich guy movie, but there is nothing Pretty In Pink about this. Pretty Ugly In Denim Maybe?
