Review of Bodyguard

Bodyguard (1948)
7/10
Wrigley Field and some great outdoor LA street shots set this noir apart.

There are some great city shots of LA in this delightful film noir and I think I have found my new favorite in-home library...in Gene Dysen's Pasadena mansion. (Side note: Wrigley field is shown off beautifully as is a wonderful little arcade.)

Mike Carter is a homicide detective whose boss (lt. Borden) has a beef with him that leads to his suspension and then eventual separation from his job. He is approached by the nephew of Gene Dysen, the owner of Continental Meat Packing, to work as her bodyguard. Things seem suspicious and they are...as Mike originally rejects the job offer, but then eventually takes the job. What Mike doesn't know is that he is the perfect patsy to be the fall guy for a murder. Good thing he is a police detective!

"Even a dumb detective like you ought to know that."-Doris.

I enjoyed the relationship between Mike and Doris, they may not have been Nick and Nora, but they did have some good exchanges along with a shared love of baseball. Lawrence Tierney does an excellent job holding down this noir that is really a decent mystery.

B film for sure...but for noir fans and fans of LA, this should be added to your list. It is a recommendation from me.
